Where it started for Allen Signs
Back in 1965, after gaining experience at several local vehicle bodyshops, a connection with transport company DMT sparked the opportunity to start something new — and Allen Signs was born.
1965-1970
Securing long-term work
Through hard work and dedication in the late 1960s, Allen Signs began building strong relationships with local businesses. One of our earliest clients was Whitton’s Bakery in Lincoln, soon followed by a growing list of local dealerships. These connections paved the way for long-term partnerships with major organisations like East Midlands Electricity, Jointline, and Bradshaw’s Transport.
1970s
Pantograph with Perspex
As the business grew, it became a true family affair, with relatives joining the team over the years. In 1971, Allen Signs welcomed its first official employee — the beginning of a growing workforce. The 1970s also marked a period of innovation, with the introduction of our first pantograph and the use of “Perspex” to create a new generation of signage. Even during the challenges of the three-day week, we kept operations running with the help of a generator. Notable projects from this era included manufacturing and installing signage on the two railway bridges of the Lincoln High Level Avoiding Line — key routes in and out of the city centre.

Significant developments
With the challenges of the 1970s behind us, the 1980s marked a new era of growth and innovation for Allen Signs. We invested in the Graphix Three vinyl letter-cutting machine and partnered with Spandex, introducing “Slatz” systems for internal directories. During this time, we completed one of our largest projects to date for Balfour Beatty at Crystal Peaks, Sheffield, followed closely by work at the Sheffield Science Park for English Estates. A standout moment from the decade was Barry Allen’s commission to hand-paint the iconic Black Panther on both sides of the Vulcan XH558 aircraft at RAF Waddington.
1990s
A move to bigger premises
The 1990s began with a milestone — celebrating 25 years of trading with a special evening for our team, customers, and family. During this decade, Allen Signs secured a major fleet livery contract with Anglian Water Services Ltd, completing around 30 vehicles per week across various locations in the county. We also delivered fleet branding for Fossitt & Thorne and Lincolnshire Co-op. In 1994, we made a significant move to larger premises in North Hykeham, doubling the space of our previous site in Waddington. This expansion enabled further growth, including the acquisition of our first CNC router — the Gerber Sabre 404 — opening up new possibilities in precision signage and fabrication.
2000-2010s
Continued success
As our capabilities expanded, Allen Signs took on a wide variety of projects. We provided engraving and signage for the York Millennium Walk, and our CNC router was increasingly used across diverse applications — including substation status boards for National Grid. The arrival of wide-format printing opened new possibilities, with our first major project involving trailer wraps for long-standing clients Optima and Branston. In 2005, we proudly marked 40 years in business by exhibiting at the Lincolnshire Show. The 2010s brought exciting growth, including a full estate rebrand for Lincolnshire Co-op and our first term contract with the University of Lincoln — a partnership that continues to this day.
2020s
Further investment
Continuing to grow, Allen Signs doubled its facility size by acquiring the neighbouring unit — significantly increasing our production space. We invested in our first hybrid EFI press, allowing us to print on both rigid and roll media, and upgraded to a larger CNC router to meet rising demand. With advancements in inkjet technology, we transitioned to HP Latex Printing for our wide-format work, enhancing both quality and sustainability. Today, our team has grown to 16 members, including two apprentices and two talented graphic designers, reflecting our commitment to both innovation and nurturing future talent.

Outside of work he likes to relax with an occasional cycle ride and a walk in the fresh around his second favourite city of York. Known for his ability to juggle multiple projects while keeping a smile on his face, David’s leadership style is as strong and smooth as his favourite espresso.

The financial maestro of Allen Signs, keeps the company’s books in perfect harmony. With a knack for numbers and an eye for detail, she ensures everything adds up just right. When she’s not balancing budgets, Helen enjoys watching tennis or she is balancing the scales, baking a mean Victoria sponge. Helen is in her happy place when relaxing and walking with David and Poppy (the Chief Morale Officer) at Chatsworth House. Delicious cakes and sharp financial insights make her an indispensable part of the team.

His colleague’s joke that he’s the only one who can design a masterpiece, serve a perfect pint, and save the planet—all in one day. As the son of David and Helen, he’s been part of the Allen Signs family from the start, honing his skills to perfection. Whether he’s wrapping a vehicle with precision or fine-tuning a race car, Chris’s dedication and expertise shine through in everything he does.
