Built-up lettering designed around your brand and building
Flat signage can identify a building. Built-up letters can define it.
By giving individual letters and logos genuine physical depth, built-up signage creates a stronger, more architectural finish. It can be designed to complement the building, reproduce your brand accurately and provide the visibility your location needs.
Across retail fascias, industrial premises, stadiums and reception areas, Allen Signs has designed, manufactured and installed built-up lettering at a wide range of scales. Each project is developed around the brand, building and environment in which the signage will be seen.

More than simply reproducing a logo
Effective built-up lettering must do more than look attractive.
The finished sign needs to remain clear from its intended viewing distance, work with the surrounding architecture and be suitable for the surface on which it will be installed. External signage must also be designed with durability, access and future maintenance in mind.
Our process considers:
- The intended viewing distance and surrounding sightlines
- The size, depth and profile of the letters
- Brand colours and specialist finishes
- The building surface and available fixing points
- Illuminated or non-illuminated construction
- Electrical access and cable routes
- Installation and maintenance requirements
Considering these details from the beginning helps create signage that looks visually clean while remaining practical and dependable.
Colour, finish and form
Built-up letters can be produced in an extensive range of colours and finishes.
Metal and brushed-metal-effect finishes create a refined, architectural appearance, while bold brand colours can make retail and industrial buildings instantly recognisable.
The physical depth of each character also creates natural highlights, shadows and contrast. This gives non-illuminated built-up lettering greater presence than a flat panel or applied graphic.
Letter shape is equally important. Bold characters can be manufactured at a substantial scale, while detailed logos and script lettering require careful interpretation to preserve the personality of the original design.

Illuminated built-up letters
Where increased visibility is needed, LED illumination can be incorporated into the letters.
Face illumination creates a bright, direct result that works particularly well for retail and customer-facing environments. Halo illumination produces a softer glow behind the letters, helping the branding stand away from the building and creating a premium architectural finish.
Face-and-halo illumination can also be combined when a more prominent lighting effect is required.
The right option will depend on your brand, background colour, viewing distance and the atmosphere you want the signage to create.

Built for internal and external environments
Built-up lettering is just as effective inside a building as it is outside.
In reception areas, offices and showrooms, dimensional lettering can transform a plain wall into a branded focal point. Polished finishes can create a premium appearance, illuminated faces can bring energy to the space and contrasting letters can stand out against timber, textured finishes or interior planting walls.
Externally, built-up letters provide the scale and durability required for retail fascias, industrial elevations, entrance features and venue signage.

From close-up detail to building-scale visibility
The same design principles apply whether the sign will be viewed from a few metres away or from across a large site.
Accurate proportions, appropriate letter depth and a clear relationship with the building are essential. For larger schemes, access and installation planning form part of the design process from the outset, helping us carefully control fixing positions, spacing and final alignment.

The result
Across the projects shown, built-up letters give each brand a clear three-dimensional presence while responding to very different buildings and audiences.
The finished signage feels connected to its surroundings while retaining the personality and visibility of the individual brand. Illuminated and non-illuminated options also allow every scheme to perform in the way its location demands.
That flexibility makes built-up lettering a strong option for businesses looking for signage with more depth, more character and more impact.
